- Romney Will Not Accept Vice Presidential Pick, Will Remain Watchdog
- Conservatives may not see it now but Romney dropping out today is the best thing that could have happened for them. McCain was on his way to almost certain victory absent a brokered convention. McCain, however, will not govern as a moderate unless he wants to face Romney in four years, and at that time Romney would have the full support of the conservative movement from the start. McCain will actually have to govern like the conservative he claims to be.
- Romney’s campaign was not fruitless. He established the conservative establishment behind him, although he admittedly could not win the South against a Baptist minister. This conservative establishment and Romney have established themselves as the chief watchdog and will carefully watch McCain’s every move.
- After four years of conservatives complaining about Huckabee giving McCain the nomination, Republicans likely will not see the conservative vote splintered in 2012 if Romney challenges McCain. Enormous pressure will mount over four years to unite behind one candidate, and that candidate will be Romney. If Huckabee runs again this pressure will squelch his chances. No candidate for the Republican nomination can survive four years of attacks from conservatives, as Huckabee is about to receive.
- McCain will not move to the left on any issues without hearing the threat that Romney will run against him in 2012. Nor will McCain fail to aggressively advocate conservative positions without hearing the same threat. McCain knows he won the nomination because conservatives did not unite behind one candidate early enough and Huckabee took the South. He also knows that this is unlikely to happen again.
- Romney will not accept McCain’s vice presidential spot because putting himself in this position would prevent him from running against McCain in four years. Now that Romney has dropped out and given McCain the nomination, he represents the teeth of the conservative watchdog.

- I'm guessing you will hear this sentiment frequently. Huckabee will win several states the rest of the way out, but not nearly enough delegates to stop McCain. Even if Huckabee splits the delegates 50/50 McCain will win the nomination.
