RUDY UNACCEPTABLE: The Republican Party "is Not Going to Nominate a Pro-Choice Candidate"

Sam Brownback, United States Senator photo portrait. This United States Congress image is in the public domain. This may be because it is an official Congressional portrait, because it was taken by an official employee of the Congress, or because it has been released into the public domain and posted on the official websites of a member of Congress. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain.

On the day of his farewell to the Republican presidential race for the nomination, staunch pro-life Senator Sam Brownback told CNS News, "He (Rudy Giuliani) is not going to be the nominee. The party is not going to nominate a pro-choice candidate. It is a pro-life party with a pro-choice wing."  See the article, GOP Won't Choose Pro-Choice Candidate, Brownback Says, CNSNews.com

Brownback has barely registered in the polls but has established a voice in this nomination cycle.  His endorsement, therefore, may carry a little bit of weight in the near future. It seems likely that social conservatives will rally around either Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney.  By dropping out of the race and elevating the pro-life cause as highly as he did today, Brownback may have transformed himself into the most visible guiding voice in the media for conservatives who is willing to take a stand, at least at this point. If other conservatives such as Newt Gingrich or Rush Limbaugh weigh in, their voices would certainly trump Brownback's.

Although Brownback did not endorse a candidate today, he certainly attempted to undermine one.  Brownback's denouncement of Giuliani as an unacceptable candidate represents the closest thing to a declaration of war by the pro-life movement against the New Yorker.

While Brownback said he would vote for Giuliani if nominated, he also said he would not be nominated. The second statement negates the first. Many pro-lifers agree with Brownback.  Whether Rudy can ride the perception that he represents the most electable candidate all the way to the nomination remains unknown. Brownback's statement today strongly suggests that Rudy may face stiffer challenges than some previously thought.
