The Media's Presumptuous PC Strategy to Elect Obama
Hillary Clinton made the "mistake" of pointing out that Obama's support among "white" working class voters is shrinking. See Clinton and White Voters. Following Clinton's articulation of this supportable observation, ultra-liberal elements within the media began to criticize Hillary as threatening to split the Democratic Party along racial lines. See The Card Clinton Is Playing.
Often the elite liberal media deem certain facts unmentionable, or as lacking in the requisite honorableness for pondering in their didactic conversations. The undeniable fact that Obama has trouble with working class white voters represents a truth that the liberal intelligentsia deems unworthy of consideration. The mere mention of this truth ostensibly endangers the stability of their platitudinous world view. Talking about such uncomfortable truths implies taking them into account when devising political strategy and subsequently leads to the ultimate sin, making decisions that potentially threaten to disparately impact minorities.
This liberal attack on Hillary's sensitivity ethic represents the first in a long and vicious line of offensives aimed at labeling any political disagreement with Obama as latently racist. Any disagreement with Obama's political positions will possess at the very least a sleeping racist quality in the narrative the liberal media will carve out. They know that Obama cannot win in the usual political environment, so they will erect a hyper-politically correct standard and eviscerate anyone who dares cross it.
Perhaps coincidentally, but nonetheless true, their strategy threatens to wreak havoc on the Republican standard-bearer's ability to draw meaningful contrast between himself and Obama. John McCain often takes into account the sensibilities of the liberal media and takes pains to avoid offending them. They may see an opening in McCain's armor and hope to rattle his confidence when speaking extemporaneously. Maybe they hope he will stutter and stammer in interviews, press-conferences and debates. They will then label this uncertainty as an indication of senility or worse.
No doubt can credibly exist as to the aim of the liberal media. They will do all they can to shield Obama from criticism on racial grounds. McCain must ignore their perpetual appeals to "civility in political discourse" and remain true to his principles. Obama will not win in a normal political environment. The battle to reshape that environment in a manner more suitable to Obama's general election chances began in earnest when the media implied that Hillary had gone too far by simply stating a highly relevant truth.
