McCain Hoping for Intense Democratic Focus McCain wants nothing more right now than for the media to turn its focus entirely to the Democratic race. This will have, he theorizes, the effect of eliminating Huckabee as a story and shifting conservatives' focus to the Democrats. This shift of focus would take conservative discontent with McCain's candidacy off the front page, and more importantly, Hillary and Obama will take center stage for the next month or two at least. This focus, McCain is betting, will bring the conservatives to his side. McCain expects conservative dislike for Hillary and Obama, and particularly Hillary, to overshadow any Republican disunity. As long as Huckabee remains a story this shift in focus cannot occur. McCain hopes to sweep today's primaries by a sufficient margin to end the Huckabee story. If Huckabee finishes stronger than expected today McCain will have to wait for the shift to occur. |
